This March in Berlin, a new era in European blues begins. The first-ever European Blues Challenge will be held on two consecutive evenings, March 18th and 19th, at the historic Kulturbrauerei in the heart of Berlin´s Prenzlauer Berg district. This exciting, one-of-a-kind concert event will bring together 16 top blues acts from 16 European countries to compete against one another, each of them having already won their respective national competition.
The European Blues Challenge (EBC), which will be held annually, is the brainchild of the European Blues Union (EBU), a non-profit organization launched in 2010 by a group of dedicated music professionals. Their common goal is to promote the blues in Europe on a variety of levels and to encourage international exchange within the industry. The first official EBU member conference will coincide with the EBC, making the weekend in Berlin the most important gathering of European blues professionals to date.
Representatives of major blues festivals will be there scouting for talent, giving competing bands added incentive to give it their all. The winner of the 2011 competition, to be declared at the end of the second night of music, will be invited to perform at Norway´s Notodden Bluesfestival, Italy´s Roots & Blues Parma, Austria´s Vienna Blues Spring, France´s Blues Sur Seine and the Lucerne Blues Festival in Switzerland.
The inaugural event will be hosted by acclaimed musician and BBC Radio personality Paul Jones and feature a special guest performance by American singer Big Daddy Wilson & Band on Saturday evening.
