Blind Mango´s mother was a homeless fruit picker and his father an itinerant New Zealand sheep shearer. They met briefly in Louisiana, the result of which being Blind Mango Chutney. The double shock of his mother discovering that her son was almost totally blind from birth, followed by his father absconding was too much for her to bear. Unable to raise the child alone, she left the newborn baby on the steps of a local fruit preserves factory. The wife of the factory owner felt sorry for the tiny abandoned bundle and undertook to raise him as her own. .. .. The factory’s most popular product was a spicy relish known as “Grandma Betty’s Hot Mango Chutney.” When the baby was 6 months old he accidentally fell into a storage container of this product, where, after intensive searching of the factory and its surrounds he was discovered 3 days later. And amazingly, not only had he survived, but in that short period had consumed almost half the chutney in the container – a total of approximately 50kg! .. .. From that day he has been known as “Blind Mango Chutney.” .. .. As many of the factory’s workers were avid blues fans, old 78’s of Blind Blake, The Rev. Gary Davis and Blind Boy Fuller, etc, were constantly being played. Thus Blind Mango grew up in an environment of traditional country blues, and, not unexpectedly it wasn’t long before he was trying to imitate the intricate rhythms and picking patterns of these blues masters on an old white archtop guitar, given to him by his adoptive mother. .. .. His first fumbling imitative attempts developed quickly into an extraordinary dexterity that found him invited to play at parties and dances from a very early age.
